Archie (jeep534) > 15 years ago I built a 75 CJ5 (one piece at a time). When it was finished it had a 360 AMC engine, T18 transmission, Model 20 transfercase, 33 inch tall tires and 3.73 gear ratio in the axles. I ran that setup for 10 years. When the motor started to get tired and I decided to start over.

After 4 years of being jeepless. And collecting parts. I traded for a bone stock 1994 jeep wrangler (YJ) 4 cylender 5 speed.

The goal of this exercise was to re-create the CJ5 only better. I kept the transmission and transfercase from the CJ5 and collected over time a 401 AMC with all the trimmings. For the un-iniated. The CJ and the YJ apear to be the same on the surface.
However as I will tell about in this little story. There are subtle differences. Not the least of which is the wrangler has the front differental on the drivers side and the CJ is on the passenger side. That means the front axle will have to be changed.

Archie (jeep534) > After draining the radiator unhooking and seperating the fuseblock connection on the firewall. Removing the fenders,grill/radiator and anything else that was not psyically welded to the jeep. The hood was never removed just flipped back on to the windsheild.
Archie (jeep534) > Then came the driveshafts and the skidplate with the trans and transfercase setting on a floor jack. I Then removed the boots, plate on the floor and both shifters. Next came the Fuel lines and motor mounts in the front.
Archie (jeep534) > Before Removing the engine Un bolt the auxillary fuse block by the battery. There is a connection behind the large rubber grommet just behind the engine pull the grommet and break the connection there seperating the harness from the jeep. then remove engine/trans/transfercase as unit.
